The long-awaited Kanaka Line of Bengaluru’s suburban rail project received a golden boost on Friday, as Larsen & Toubro (L&T) bagged the coveted Rs 1,040-crore contract for its construction. This critical segment, spanning 46 kilometers, will connect Rajanukunte in the north to Heelalige in the south, easing traffic woes and providing a vital transportation artery for the burgeoning metropolis.
The contract includes the design and construction of both elevated viaducts (8.9 km) and at-grade tracks (37.9 km), weaving through key areas like Baiyappanahalli and Yelahanka. Scheduled for completion within 30 months, the Kanaka Line promises to be a game-changer for Bengaluru’s commuters, offering a fast, reliable, and eco-friendly mode of travel.
“This project is a significant milestone for the development of Bengaluru and its suburbs,” said a jubilant spokesperson for L&T. “We are committed to delivering a world-class infrastructure that will not only improve connectivity but also contribute to the overall economic growth of the region.”
The award of the contract marks a crucial step forward for the ambitious Bengaluru Suburban Rail Project, which aims to create a 148-kilometer network crisscrossing the city. The Kanaka Line, also known as Corridor 4, forms a vital backbone of this network, connecting densely populated areas and major employment hubs.
“This is a major victory for the people of Bengaluru,” said a beaming official from the Karnataka Rail Infrastructure Development Company (KRIDE), the implementing agency for the project. “The Kanaka Line will significantly decongest roads, reduce travel time, and boost economic activity along its route.”
The project has garnered widespread enthusiasm from commuters and residents alike, offering a glimmer of hope for tackling the city’s ever-growing traffic woes. With L&T’s expertise onboard, the Kanaka Line is poised to become a shining example of urban infrastructure development in India, setting a benchmark for future projects.
